Nick Hytner (the director) and Simon Russell Beale (Benedick) talk about how this is conveyed in the current production.

Shakespeare's daring combinations of different mood and characters

Oliver Ford Davies (Leonato) admires that the way Shakespeare juxtaposes comic and tragic scenes, and dares to have a character like Leonato as, say, a bit of a fool in the gulling scene, and then exhibit angry eloquence in the wedding scene.
