I Want To Be A Director

To make it as a director you’ll need experience, dedication, enthusiasm and skill. Make sure you see a wide range of theatre productions and try to talk to the people creating the work. You might start directing with a youth theatre or student drama society and move on to directing fringe shows. You’ll have to be a good communicator and will have to learn to persuade people of your vision and encourage them to take risks. It’s not all about being visionary, though - you’ll need practical skills too: understanding budgets, technical issues and, above all, people.

Most of your training as a director will be on the job. You might get a job as an assistant director but you should also take the initiative in finding short courses and workshop programmes. You’ll probably have a degree but it needn’t be in drama or theatre studies. Moving on to larger productions means building a reputation and getting people to see your shows. Once you’re established on stage you may have opportunities to use your directing talents in film and television.
