Berenger and Jean

The complex friendship between Berenger and Jean is central to Rhinoceros.

In order for the audience to be interested in this friendship, it’s vital that Dominic Cooke (the production’s director) finds actors who will fit the roles. In particular, Dominic explains why Benedict Cumberbatch was perfect for the role of Berenger.

Berenger’s character is very similar to that of Eugene Ionesco, the play’s author.

Jean is a man who takes great pride in his appearance, but Jasper Britton (who plays Jean) thinks that this is just a cover for a deeply troubled persona.

Benedict describes the complex friendship between Berenger and Jean.
