| | Becoming a rhinoceros | | | |
Rhinoceroschallenges an actor in many ways, particularly by requiring many of the cast (including Jasper Britton as Jean) to play rhinoceroses. The process of becoming a rhino starts with a group visit to the zoo. This is followed up by movement workshops led by Sue Lefton, the production’s movement director. Despite this, rehearsals uncover the fact that a convincing rhinoceros impersonation is built as much by following the emotions of the spoken words as it is by movement work. Furthermore, Jasper feels that his transformation into a rhino is more philosophical than physical. |
