Ken Smith, the head flyman, tells us about the two different systems for lowering and raising backdrops or props. The first is called hemp, and is powered by the flyman's muscles. It consists of three ropes attached to a bar: the bar goes down when the ropes are released and back up when they are pulled. The second is a counterweight system: there's a bar and a cradle on one side that's loaded up with weights to counter-balance what the bar is holding.
