The play closes where it began in the Botanic Gardens in Oxford. To save their worlds, Lyra and Will (Anna Maxwell Martin, and Dominic Cooper) must give up their newly–discovered love and part forever. They vow to return every year at midnight on midsummer’s day so that each will know the other is there, though they will never meet again.
