Simon Higlett: Lanterns

The Crucible opens with people on stage and 30 lanterns flying up very slowly which designer Simon Higlett says creates a sense of community and being in church. He was inspired by paintings by Georges de la Tour, an artist of a slightly earlier period, who painted theatrical-looking scenes with black backgrounds where the subjects glowed, but where you never see the light source.
