Designer Simon Higlett says that the process of designing costumes starts with research. He then does black and white sketches of the costumes and shows them to the actors for feedback. For this production of The Crucible, most of the costumes were hired, as Simon wanted costumes that were worn and lived in and also because it was cheaper than making them all.
