Carousel: Costume designs

The costumes for The Crucible were designed by Simon Higlett, who also designed the set. He was inspired by 17th century French painter Georges de la Tour who paints his subjects in candlelight or lantern-light, against black backgrounds. Simon starts with a rough black and white sketch of the costumes where he superimposes a portrait of the actor, then shows it to them to get feedback. He also discusses possible costume colours with each actor, presenting them with a colour range and looking to see which colours are most appropriate for the actor’s hair and eye colour.
