Jonathan Church: Importance of light

Director Jonathan Church tells us that light is very important in the stage directions of The Crucible. The play takes place at a time before there was electricity, giving light the power to bring comfort and to instill fear in its absence. Although these people's lives are shaped by the land, they've created big wooden structures that contain their lives, and Jonathan says that light will be used in this production to represent the power of collective religious belief. In the first scene, the community will be on stage with lanterns to set up their world spiritually and visually and to reflect the importance of light in their world.
