Lighting demo: Act 1

Act 1 takes place in the attic of Reverend Parris’ house, and lighting designer Mark Jonathan describes how they create the effect of people walking around with lanterns in the room below by rolling out a mirror floor below the floorboards of the stage and shooting light from the back. The light builds, leading up to the scene where Betty Parris is lying in bed in the early morning, but here the lighting is confined and only the bed is lit by strong light coming through a small attic window.
