Designer Simon Higlett started designing the set for The Crucible by taking the concept and sitting at his drawing board. Since it is a touring production, he overlaid the plans of each venue to make sure it would fit each one. From the sketches, he built a white three-dimensional model, which he gradually coloured in and built up.
