Director Jonathan Church says that Patricia Kerrigan has made the relationship between her character, Elizabeth Proctor, and John, more passionate than is typically portrayed. He says that during the previews, he thought that it had been pushed too far and that her lines had developed too much irony, so they reworked it to find a better balance.
