Jonathan Church: John Proctor’s dilemma

According to director Jonathan Church, The Crucible is a powerful play because it explores the dilemma that an individual sometimes has to resolve: whether to tell the truth and take the consequences or follow the mob and take the easy route. The power of the play comes out in moments such as when Elizabeth Proctor is asked about her husband’s relationship with Abigail: the audience is hoping that she will tell the truth but she doesn’t.
