Director Jonathan Church says that the key characteristics of the character John Proctor are that he is a man with physical strength who works on the land; he is honest, has a sense of purpose and is willing to go to his death over a point of principle. Actor Malcolm Storry is a bit older than the typical casting for this part, but Jonathan says that he had the right qualities, which was more important than the his age.
