Jonathan Church: Fine-tuning the role of John Hale

Jonathan Church says that working with actor Paul Shelley, who plays Reverend Hale, involved a lot of fine tuning. He says that both he and Paul considered Hale to be a man of reason, which affected the character’s questioning of Tituba in Act 1, and eventually they decided to try taking a harder line of questioning. In Act 2, they played with the balance of how gentle and how suspicious Hale is when questioning the Proctors.
