Oliver Cotton: The jail scene

Actor Oliver Cotton, who plays Deputy Governor Danforth, says that during the final act in the jail, his goal is to get Proctor and the other people to confess so they won’t be hanged. Danforth is in a state of inner panic, because if innocent people are hanged, it could have terrible repercussions for the state. In the end, Proctor wins out because he tears up his confession.
