Paul Shelley: Comparing Proctor and Hale’s journeys

Actor Paul Shelley, who plays Reverend Hale, says that Hale’s journey is further than John Proctor’s and he carries the audience with him through the entire play. He says that John Proctor reaches heroic status at the end of the play because he goes from being a self-doubting man to making a decision he believes in, whereas Hale had no doubts in the beginning but realises by the end that he was completely wrong.
