Kenneth Cranham: Themes in the play

Kenneth Cranham says that the play is all about the consequences of panic of paranoia causing people to go into denial, and to fantasise about what is actually happening. The core action of the play takes place, he says, in the gap in time between the mayor finding out that the UN Inspector is on his way and the time when the real inspector arrives.
