Commas used by modern editors

Barrie Rutter, director of The Wars of the Roses and himself an experienced actor, tells us why he thinks there is a lot of unnecessary punctuation in modern editions of Shakespeare’s plays. Commas, and other punctuation are there, Rutter claims, to help the reader, but they don’t often help the actor.
