Plenary Suggestions

Stagework focuses on Northern Broadside’s production of Richard III and contains a wealth of useful resources for screening in the classroom including interviews with some of the key characters (including the Mayor, Buckingham, Richard, and Catesby). It also has some interesting interviews with the play’s director, Barry Rutter in which he talks about Shakespeare’s language, and also with the play’s designer, Jess Worrall who reveals that the inspiration for her design stemmed from watching construction sites in which it was never entirely clear whether a building was being put up or demolished: very like the condition of England during the wars of the roses. Stagework also contains a workshop on the opening soliloquy filmed with KS3 children in a North London school: it may inspire students to adopt a similar practical approach to speaking Shakespeare.
